Canyoning

Canyoning is an amazing way to experience the Blue Mountains. Hidden amongst the Blue Mountains is a labyrinth of gullies, creeks, waterfalls, and cliffs. We take you on an exploration of this World Heritage listed environment, which has taken millions of years to evolve. Our adventures will have you swimming through tunnels, jumping and sliding into pools, and abseiling down waterfalls.
We have a range of options to suit your skill and fitness level.
We supply all the technical gear – wetsuits, backpacks, waterproof bags, helmets and harnesses. All you need to bring is a pair of shoes you can get wet, a drink bottle, and your camera. We specialize in small groups and private adventures, to ensure you get the best supervision and assistance as possible. We are the only company who carry a satilite phone and EPIRB on our wilderness trips.
The Canyons
Introductory Canyons – These are great if you have never canyoned before, or are looking for less physically demanding day
Empress Falls Canyon – ½ Day Abseil ½ Day Canyon
This is our most popular adventure.
We spend the morning teaching the skills of abseiling by progressing through a series of cliffs up to 30 meters. After lunch we enter the canyon, which involves a number of swims and jumps, and finishes with a spectacular 30 meter abseil down the Empress Falls.
Starting Time : 9am
Grand Canyon – ½ Day Abseil ½ Day Canyon
Following a morning abseiling lesson we enter the canyon via a 25 meter “free hanging” abseil. From there we negotiate our way through the canyon. We finish with great views into the Grose Valley.
Starting Time : 9am
Fortress Creek Canyon
This is a full day of canyoning, which finishes at one of the best views in the Mountains. A great easy-intermeadiate canyon with a short abseil and some great jumps.
Starting Time : 8.30am
Rocky Creek Canyon and Twister Canyon
These two canyons combined make one of the most popular canyoning experiences in the mountains.
Twister canyon has multiple water jumps, which getter bigger and bigger. Rocky Creek Canyon is simply stunning.
Intermediate Canyons – These are generally full day canyons, with multiple abseils and swims.
Bowens Creek Canyon
This canyon is spectacular, and rarely guided. It starts by descending through a rainforest, then follows the canyon down two waterfalls. It has some of the best water jumps (up to 8m) in the Blue Mountains. This is probably our favorite full day canyon.
Starting Time: 8am
Serendipity Canyon
This canyon is a great full-day adventure. It involves 4 abseils, and some great jumps. The canyon eventually finishes into the Wollangambe Canyon, where we find more jumps and a great lunch spot.
Starting Time: 8am
Advanced Canyons – These trips are people with previous canyoning experience, who are physically fit and have abseiling experience.
Claustral Canyon
This is widely regarded as the best canyon in the Blue Mountains. The highlight is the three abseils down " the black hole of Calcutta”.
It takes 6-8 hours to navigate the canyon, and is worth every second.
Starting Time : 6.30am
Butterbox/Rocky Point Ravine Canyon
This grade five canyon is a serious undertaking, and reserved for people with previous experience. It has 7 abseils and an exposed rockclimb to get out.
Starting Time : 7.00am
Whungee Wheengee Canyon
This is one of the most spectacular canyons in the Blue Mountains. Listed as a Wilderness Canyon, we are only allowed to take a small number of clients into this canyon each year. It involves swimming through pitch black tunnels, and looking up at the glow worms above. Amazing.
Starting Time : 6.00am
Kanangra Main Canyon
The ultimate canyoning experience. The trip starts by abseiling down a 150 meter waterfall. This is followed by another 9 abseils, and numerous swims. If the canyon you want to do is not listed here, contact us and we will organise a trip for you. info@australianclimbing.com.au

So what exactly happens?
We start early (generally we prefer to start early and finish early, that way we give ourselves plenty of daylight. How early depends on which trip,) and begin by kiting you out with wetsuits, drybags, and anything else you might need for the day, such as extra warm clothes, harnesses and helmets.
Most canyons usually involve a 30 - 60min walk from the car to the start (where we unload our packs and put on the wetsuits, waterproof everything and jump in).
The canyons usually involve navigating our way down through caves, rainforests, waterfalls, andcreek/river systems, swimming, abseiling and walking.
Snacks are provided along the way, and we usually get the stove out for a hot drink with lunch.
The walk out is often an adventure in its own right, which might involve rock climbing, scrambling, and abseiling. The magnificent views and scenery just add to it. What do I need to bring ?
